ENERGY DRINKS Energy drinks are said to contain stimulant drugs. These stimulant drugs are marketed to provide physical and mental stimulation. The drinks may either be carbonated or not, and may contain other additives such as sugars and other sweeteners, amino acids as well as herbal extracts (Laudan 2009 p.67). There is a large group of various energy products and energy drinks are a subset of this group. Tea, coffee as well as other caffeinated beverages are not categorized as energy drinks. There are other drinks such as cola which although they contain caffeine, they are not categorized as energy drinks. The essay is going to discuss in depth on how energy drinks affects one’s body. The intake of energy drinks has both positive and negative impacts on the end user. We are going to discuss in length both the positive and the negative effects that the user might experience in using the energy drinks. Among the positive effects, is that the energy drinks tend to keep one awake and focused. Most people take advantage of this factor as they are able to attain the ability to control their sleeping habits. On taking the energy drinks, the user is able to boost their energy and can do thing that they probably would find difficult if they had not taken in the drinks (Laudan 2009 p.137). If one had a task that they needed to complete, say for example during the night, the intake of the energy drink will boost their ability to stay awake thus being able to work comfortably. The fact that drink not only quenches the thirst of the user but also gives them a boost both in strength and focus gives the drink an upper hand. Another positive effect of the energy drink is that the drink is non-alcoholic. Most parents would rather see their children taking the energy drink for the reason that it has no alcohol content in it. An analysis by the United States bureau in the year two thousand and eleven, it was confirmed that the greatest number of deaths in the country are caused by drivers who are under the influence of alcohol (Laudan 2009 p.211). The intake of the energy drinks thus is seen to reduce the number of accidents that take place every year. More people are encourage to use the drinks rather than taking drinks that are alcoholic. It is true to say that the intake of the energy drink has gone up in many parts of the world. The reason for this is that most people are welcoming the drinks intake more and more as compared to the intake of alcoholic beverages (Laudan 2009 p.271). We can therefore say that since the energy drinks are not alcoholic, they have become more and more popular in the reduction of accidents. The fact that the energy drinks are seen to be made of low-carb also gives then a major advantage in the market. This means that on the intake of the drink, the whole body is filed up and the brains function is boosted. The consumer therefore gins the ability to carry out tasks they couldn’t carry out in the normal states of their bodies. Non carbohydrate diets are said to be ketogenic. The meaning of this is that thy cause the body to go in a state of ketosis. When a human body is said to go into a ketosis state, it means that the body fats as well as the dietary fats are converted into ketone bodies thus fueling the whole of the body to ninety five percent (Laudan 2009 p.181). The body becomes very active and the brain becomes very alert causing the person to become more active than they were before the intake of the drink. All the positive effects of the energy drinks result to more people going to the stores and purchasing the drinks. The companies that manufacture them are therefore seen to be at the greatest advantage as profit margins are high. The more the people take the energy drinks for various reasons, the more the companies that manufacture them make profits. Other than the energy drinks having various advantages, they also bring about various draw backs. These drawbacks are mostly not experienced by the companies that manufacture them but rather the people that consume the products. The more one takes in the energy drinks, the more they raise alarm in their health status. Continuous intake of energy drinks results to the consumer feeling weak and tired after consuming it. The reason behind this is that the hipper effect that the drink brings along causes the consumer to suppress their ability to sleep. The backlogs of sleep can easily cause the consumer to feel weak and not be able to expertly explain why they have that kind of feeling (Laudan 2009 p.95). Another drawback of taking these drinks is the contents that are contained in them. Most of the energy drinks have their caffeine levels very high and continual intake of the energy drink can result to health hazards such as heart problems. If one has habitual intake of the energy drinks, they are exposing themselves to the danger of losing their lives. The heart will get damaged in the process thus causing the death of consumers. There is a recommendation by the medics that the intake of the drinks should not be so high due to the high levels of caffeine found in the drinks (Laudan 2009 p.107). In other cases, young people mix the alcoholic drinks with the energy drinks. This is a very deadly move and it should be totally avoided as it could la to death. Most young people therefore need to be educated on the effects of caring out these practices so as to retain a lifestyle that is healthy and be able to save their lives. Conclusively, we can see that the intake of energy drinks has its advantages and disadvantages. Looking at it on the health side, we can end up concluding that continual and constant intake of energy drinks is harmful to the consumer’s health. It is therefore important for the consumers to be aware of the health risks that are involved in the intake and be very careful. As seen in the paragraphs above, the young people should be enlightened on the dangers of mixing the energy drinks with alcoholic beverages as it could lead to loss of life. In order to be able to maintain a healthy life style, one should have a balance of the products that they choose to consume (Laudan 2009 p.71). In my opinion, I would not suggest that consumers completely cut out the intake of energy drinks but should have a disciplined paten of taking them. Consumers can also learn to substitute the intake of the energy drinks with other beverages such as coffee. References list LAUDAN, R.
