Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare This personal essay is a requirement for my application to pharmacy schools. As and admission essay I will try to discuss my suitability of deciding to enroll at Western University of California. I will therefore include topics about my back ground and interest and make a relevant connection to choosing a career in pharmacy which eventually leads me to finish a doctoral degree in Pharmacy by the same school. This paper in effect would involve addressing why I selected pharmacy as a career and how the Doctor of Pharmacy degree relates to my immediate and long-term professional goals. Let me say then at the start that I want to be the best pharmacist that I could be and I intend to finish a course in pharmacy to the best of my ability. I also know that I have what it takes to finish the course up to the doctoral program. I do chose pharmacy as career because I believe this will be my future and lifetime work. My choice was of course premised on my interest on the profession and based on my honest assessment of my abilities. I do believe that life must be spent where one will enjoy it and I believe that must be divinely inspired since I believe in the purpose for everything. Let us talk then about my interest. Wanting to prepare myself for the field of pharmacy, I am currently doing volunteer work at a local pharmacy. Here, I am encountering something new each day that I can’t learn at a school. Because of countless numbers of medicines, I’m still not familiar with most of them, but as time passes by, I am learning something new about the effects of certain drugs, preparation and distributive functions that support the medication management, and pharmaceutical care duties. Since I’ve been working at this pharmacy, I came to realize that a pharmacist is not just a person who hands out prepared drugs to people. Pharmacists deal with lives of ill people everyday and they have to carry certain amount of responsibility and duty to fulfill their jobs. By volunteering for such job, I have been able to have hands-on experience with the patients that come in and learned how to be more caring and concerned. Having the interest which is explained above, I looked at my capabilities and ask myself on how could I excel in a profession I love to do? First I told my self I need to have an education. Evaluating what I have now just matches what the requirements of the course at Western University of California. My degree in college is biology and it is one of the requirements of the school. This is also very much related to what I have taken in studying chemical engineering as a major prior to my taking biology. A course in pharmacy I believe would also include the virtue of patience which I found out to have in realizing the importance of making the effort even through the most challenging situations from the research experiences that I had in my previous studies. I also found out that the school offers a doctoral program in Pharmacy under a flexible arrangement and so I therefore now realize that there is opportunity of finishing the course. I will just have to satisfy requirements and the school would allow me to continue under the doctoral program. I will just need to complete a minimum of two years of preprofessional education at an accredited college or university before being admitted to the doctoral program.1 That would be great and exciting to look forward to. One of the professional goals, aside becoming a pharmacist, I have is to help out with handicap children in the community. I would like to start a volunteer organization or at least participate in one that helps out with handicap children in hospitals. Perhaps this is very much consistent with what I personally, to be a great mother. A mother’s responsibilities are a very important factor in a growing child’s life and so a pharmacist must be in treating patients who will ask about the medicines that they will buy. The pharmacist must explain to patients lovingly but responsively. Hence, philosophically, I believe I could be a good pharmacist. I would say Pharmacy is my dream and I have asked several people about it and I have heard their advices and for that I became more focused on my goal. During an internship program that I had, there were many projects involving me personally going out and interacting with people for research purposes. By walking around the campus and surveying people on certain marketing products, I was able to have deeper understanding of the material I was learning and most of all it helped me some communication problems. Such experience in research I believe will also help me in my goal because to successfully finish a course on Pharmacy, one needs to have good skills in research plus the fact that the Pharmaceutical Industry, which has its roots in pharmacy, is a research based industry.2 I would like also to become a good mother like my own mother and I believe having a career that matches interest and capabilities would not be very far from my plan to become a good mother. If the career will give me good job or good business, I could just imagine myself enjoying the two together in the near future. Given the right philosophy, interest in career, capabilities to finish the course, previously relevant experience and all in line with medium term and long term goals of becoming the best pharmacist that I could be, I believe everything is working for realization of what I would say a divine inspired career. I believe Western University School would be more than willing to help me realize the dream.
