Educators have a major role to play in observing and creating awareness on ant discriminatory practices to all children regarding race, religion, culture, family background, and more importantly their physical abilities.

It is therefore for all educators to be aware of the guiding principles and legislative policies that govern anti-discriminatory practices in learning institutions for children between age eight and ten years. At this tender age, children do learn about their cultural differences, multiracial society, physical ability, and disabilities for the physically and mentally challenged among themselves. It is therefore important that they learn to appreciate each other the way they are from the teachers or educators that are assigned that duty.

However, the training and the awareness of principles, policies, and awareness on the anti-discriminatory practices are not effective by themselves and require the educators to recognize the effects of discrimination and its effect on the learning and personal, emotional, and social development of a child. (Dickins, 2002)Formulation of policies such as the Special Education Needs Policy is the fundamental step in the anti-discriminatory practices for the physically, sensory, or mentally impaired children.

The strategies that can be used to combat discriminationThe strategies that can be used to combat discrimination of children with disabilities vary depending on the need of the child. Children with disabilities include the physically challenged and the mentally challenged. The way forward to combat discrimination should therefore consider the child's special needs. (Dickins, 2002)Awareness of policies governing discriminationThe educator should be aware of the laws governing discrimination against the physically challenged or the children with learning difficulties are they are often referred.

The educator should make sure that the child's rights are observed and protected as well under the United Nations Convention for the disabled. By so doing the educator will be able to cater to the needs of the child right in school and also at home as he or she is supposed to identify how the child is treated back at home by the parents since they are the first educators of the child. (Dickins, 2002)Putting the policies into practiceThe educator should put the policies about discrimination into practice in the way he or she handles the children in the special school.

He should first ensure that other forms of discrimination do not exist in the school environment. The other forms of discrimination include; racial, gender, social, family background, religious discrimination. When all these remain neutral in the school, the learner and the educator will be able to fight against disability discrimination. (Dickins, 2002)The ways through which discrimination can be avoided in the anti-discrimination practice for the children who are mentally or physically challenged include;Giving equal attentionChildren who have special needs do not like being the center of attraction and therefore the educator or the teacher should avoid paying too much attention to them but should give equal attention to all students in a class so that the disabled also feel that they have the equal ability like others.

Treating them especially makes them disturbed and would like to be treated like the other children unless assistance is needed. (Dickins, 2002)Equal sharing of resourcesChildren with special needs should be considered in sharing of resources since they are not equally able like the other children, they should be taken care of to ensure that they are not discriminated against in resource use and sharing. They should also be assisted while using some resources since they can not be able to use them by themselves.

(Dickins, 2002)Ensure participationThe educator should ensure that the children with special needs do participate in school activities just like the other children depending on their physical abilities. Involvement in extra curriculum activities makes socialization easier among the children in a school. Leaving children with special needs out of some activities makes them feel left out in the school community which may, in turn, affect their social and mental development. In a school, the children should be made aware of the need to accept others the way they are so that they do not discriminate against them during activities in class or outside the classroom in case of extra curriculum activities.

(Dickins, 2002)Any policies have been put forward to cater to disabled people and children. This policy can be broadly be categorized into the following groups;Accessibility democracy policiesThere are new laws that have been formulated to cater to children with disabilities for them to be able to access various public services to avoid discrimination. Special school for children with special needs to be able to access education just like any other children has been established under the special needs act.

(Dickins, 2002)Accessibility to public places has also been considered to ensure that children get access to public transport, social places and also participate in sporting activities.
