The most important point being made by Wolf is that though the rebirth of feminism has emancipated women since they are now able to take up better-paying jobs like their male counterparts, the liberated women of the current period feel that more needs to be done to enhance their beauty. There is a general sentiment echoed by the “liberated” women that beauty should complement their newly found freedom. This is the reason why the notion of beauty has been commodified. For instance, women are seen applying artificial cosmetics to beautify themselves since they believe that there is a strong correlation between power and beauty.  Indeed, they are paying a price for it. This hallucinationation has seen a boom in market manipulation such as the “$33 billion a year diet industry, the $20 billion a year cosmetics industry, the $300 million cosmetic surgery industry for instance.” Thus, a critical analysis of the excerpt by the wolf shows that the contemporary woman is trapped in the myth of beauty. Their life is centered on material beauty that is used to define a new role in society. Modern women believe that beauty and sexuality are complementary to each other.

This point is important because women tend to view themselves from another dimension apart from their natural physique. Modern women are more concerned about their appearance in the eyes of the other people who see them.
Women find themselves in a trap because they want to create a world of their own that is centered on the notion of beauty.
A lot of women spend a fortune on cosmetics to beautify themselves. To a certain extent, this shows that women are not confident in themselves since they are driven by the desire to impress people around them and they use beauty as a weapon to achieve this status. Read More
