Introduction

Abrahao Andre de Araujo conducted research named “Adjustment Issues of International Students Enrolled in American Colleges and Universities”, in this research he conducted a search and review of various pieces of literature in accordance with the issues experienced by foreign students when they are admitted to educational institutes located in America (Araujo, 2011, p.2). Through his research, he figured out that the main issues experienced included: inability to fluently speak and write in English, lack of support that is social in nature, the time period they spend in the US, their perception of biasness towards them. Other issues include failure to create and maintain relationships with natives of America and the issue of home-based sickness.

Body

Stress and adjustment issues are even related to the ability to speak and write the English language and support that is social in nature. Inability to properly speak and write in the English language was a key factor that resulted in the stressful situation for international students. Similarly, they figured out that those international pupils who were fluent in speaking English experienced lower levels of stress-related to expressing themselves. The researchers further figured out that those international students experienced a higher level of stress that had a lower level of support that is social in nature and a lower level of stress was experienced by those who had a higher level of support.

Stress and adjustment issues are even related to the length of the period spent in the US and the perception of being discriminated against. Students who have stayed in the US for a longer period of time experienced fewer issues in adjustment or stress related to adjustment. They figured out that those who have spent more than six years in the nation had little difficulty in adjusting to the environment than those who have to spend zero to five years in the nation. The researchers even figured out that a higher amount of adjustment issues were experienced by those who perceived that they will be subjected to prejudice and discrimination. For example students from Asian and African nations.

Relationship creation and home-based sickness have been associated with international student’s stress and adjustment issues. Researchers asserted that those international students who were able to make relationships from their own cultural background and with other Americans found it easier to adjust to the American environment. Similarly, international students have reported higher levels of home-based sickness than domestic students and the degree of bias attitude towards international students determined the degree of their home-based sickness.
